- Leaving the Scene of an Accident
On Friday, July 8, at approximately 11:56 a.m., Newport Police were dispatched to a residence on East Main Street for a report of a stolen motor vehicle.
Upon arrival, police spoke to the vehicle’s owner and a witness, who reported that he observed a man — later identified as BOCASH — enter the vehicle, a black 2020 Lincoln, and drive away at a high rate of speed.
A short time later at approximately 1 p.m., police learned that a vehicle matching the description of and later determined to be the one reported stolen had crashed into a house on Route 100 in Lowell.
Newport Police, along with officers from the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, arrived to the scene of the crash. Officers located BOCASH while he was allegedly in the process of fleeing the scene on foot.
BOCASH refused medical treatment on scene and was taken into custody without incident.
While officers were investigating the incident, they also learned that BOCASH had allegedly crashed the vehicle reported stolen into another vehicle on The Causeway and into guardrails on Highland Avenue before allegedly crashing into the home on Route 100.
BOCASH was held over the weekend at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport on $25,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned in Orleans County Criminal Court on Monday, July 11.
The incident remains under investigation by the Newport Police Department and the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
