HANSON — Police Chief Michael Miksch and Whitman-Hanson Regional School District Superintendent Jeffrey Szymaniak report that a crash occurred this morning involving a motor vehicle and school bus in town.
At approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday, the Hanson Police Department received a call for a motor vehicle collision involving a Whitman-Hanson Regional School District bus in the 100 block of Main Street. Hanson Police officers and members of the Hanson Fire Department responded to the scene.
The school bus was occupied by the driver and one student at the time of the incident.
The stopped bus was struck from behind by a motor vehicle. The bus had all appropriate lights and signage activated. The student had just boarded the bus with a parent nearby.
No injuries were reported as a result of the collision. Another school bus was brought into service to continue student pick-ups.
The crash remains under investigation by the Hanson Police Department.
The Hanson Police Department and Whitman-Hanson Regional School District remind all motorists of the following rules and safety tips involving school buses:
- If driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if you were driving behind a car.
- Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you’re on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children. It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.
- If the yellow or red lights of a bus are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop.
- The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus.
