BURLINGTON — Chief Michael Kent is pleased to announce that the three newest members of the Burlington Police Department completed their academy training this week.
Officers Brian Goggin, Tristan Cochran and Haydn Matarazzo completed the Northern Essex Community College Methuen Police Academy on Wednesday, July 8. A socially distanced ceremony was held at NECC in Haverhill on Wednesday to celebrate the graduates. The three will be sworn in next week.
The police academy is 24 weeks long and consists of more than 900 hours of a combination of practical and classroom training, certifications and service to the community. Some of the classes include first aid, law, applied patrol procedures, firearms, report writing, active shooter training, specialized driving and self defense. All in-person trainings were done in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Officer Goggin started at the Concord Police Department in Concord, N.H. in 2018 before joining the Burlington Police Department. He’s also worked as a security officer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in Spanish from Norwich University in Norwich, Vermont. He lives in Billerica.
Officer Cochran worked as a security officer for both the International Protective Services and Madison Security group prior to joining the Burlington Police Department. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He lives in Dracut.
Officer Matarazzo earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he also minored in psychology and business. He lives in Lowell.
“Congratulations to the newest members of the department for completing this rigorous training,” Chief Kent said. “All of us at the Burlington Police Department look forward to working with Officers Goggin, Cochran and Matarazzo, and wish them all the best as they begin this next step in their careers.”
The three will now complete a 10-week field training program.
