STONEHAM — Police Chief James O’Connor and Fire Chief Matthew Grafton are pleased to report that a Stoneham first responders, including a police officer, dispatcher and firefighters who assisted the home delivery of a baby reunited with the healthy and happy family on Wednesday afternoon.
On Friday, Oct. 27, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Stoneham Police and Fire were called to an apartment at 200 Park Terrace Drive for a report of a woman in labor. While rushing to the apartment, they were updated that contractions were coming quickly and that the mother was ready to start pushing. The baby was on his way.
Dispatcher Kelly McNamara provided emergency medical dispatch instructions over the phone while police and fire were en route. Stoneham Police Officer Lucas Ferraz was first to arrive and immediately began assisting the mother, Allison Haley, as she was in active labor with a breach birth. One of the baby’s legs was already visible.
Firefighters Arthur Yeomelakis and Brent Last, along with Fire Lt. Mark Chabak, soon arrived, and Firefighter Yeomelakis caught the baby as Officer Ferraz assisted mom.
Baby Calvin, who weighed in at 4 pounds and 13 ounces, was born in the apartment healthy and crying loudly and strongly. Mother and child were then transported to Melrose Wakefield Hospitalby Cataldo Ambulance.
On Wednesday afternoon, the first responders involved in the delivery were able to reunite with the family, sharing laughter and tears of joy as they recounted the early morning birth.
“I am so thrilled to see you all again,” said Allison Haley, as both she and her husband Nick thanked each of the first responders involved.
The Haley family said Stoneham first responders helped them feel safe despite the emergency, and that they are extremely thankful for the professionalism and care of first responders.
“I am extremely proud of Officer Ferraz, who recently became a father himself, and of Dispatcher McNamara for their calm, professional response to what could have been a life-threatening birth,” said Chief O’Connor. “It was truly a pleasure to reunite with the happy family today.”
“I want to recognize the professionalism displayed by all the first responders on scene. I’m grateful that all the training we do to prepare for situations like this paid off, even though mom had the hardest job of all,” said Chief Grafton. “Congratulations to the Haley family!”
