NARRAGANSETT — Chief Sean Corrigan is pleased to announce that Officers Ajanae Scavone and James Fitzgerald have been appointed as school resource officers (SRO).
Officer Scavone will be assigned to the Elementary School and Officer Fitzgerald will be assigned to the Pier Middle School. Officer Fitzgerald replaces Officer Kevin O’Connor as the Pier School SRO, who has taken another position within the department.
As SROs, Officers Scavone and Fitzgerald will maintain a safe and secure environment at school and during special events, provide counsel and guidance to school administrators regarding school safety, build positive relationships with students and staff, and provide safety presentations and programs.
Officer Scavone has been a patrol officer in Narragansett since 2015. She has completed training in Crisis Intervention and Mental Health First Aid. She also assisted with the department’s Citizens Police Academy in 2017 and 2018, and has served as a guest speaker at the University of Rhode Island and Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, where she talked with students interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. She has received Community Acknowledgements for participating in community outreach initiatives, assisting individuals experiencing mental health crises, and in recognition of her skills as an investigator.
From 2016-2019, Officer Scavone served as the head coach for girl’s basketball at the Pier School.
Officer Fitzgerald has served as a patrol officer since 2010. He has completed training in Crisis Intervention, Youth Crisis Intervention and Mental Health First Aid, and is working toward certification in car seat safety and installation. Additionally, he is a Citizens Police Academy Facilitator and a certified ALICE active shooter training instructor.
He has been recognized with the 100 Club’s Special Merit Award in recognition of outstanding commitment and service to the community, and a Certificate of Commendation. He has also received several Community Acknowledgements and “Positive Guardian” recognitions.
In May, the Narragansett Town Council approved adding a third school resource officer to serve the Elementary School. In addition to Officers Scavone and Fitzgerald, Officer Kyle Rooney continues to serve as the SRO at Narragansett High School.
“I am grateful to the Town Council for approving a third SRO and supporting our department in providing the safest possible learning environment for students and staff,” Chief Corrigan said. “I am confident that Officers Scavone and Fitzgerald will each be a great resource for the elementary and middle school communities.”
