CONCORD — Police Chief Thomas Mulcahy and Fire Chief Tom Judge report that their departments responded to a crash in which a vehicle left Lowell Road and entered the Assabet River on Monday afternoon.
On Monday, May 1, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Concord Police and Fire Departments received 911 calls reporting a vehicle left Lowell Road in the area of Macone Pond and entered the Assabet River.
An off-duty police officer and another bystander attempted to help the driver, but were unable to get the driver out of the vehicle. The vehicle came to rest in about three feet of water.
The Concord Fire Department arrived a short time later and was able to free the driver after cutting a door off the vehicle with hydraulic tools. The driver was then placed onto a stretcher and hauled up an approximately 20-foot embankment by firefighters.
The driver was taken by ambulance to a landing zone at the Fenn School and, from there, was flown to a Boston-area trauma center.
There were no other vehicles involved and the driver was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Concord Police continue to investigate the crash with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
Lowell Road is expected to be closed in the area of Macones Pond until further notice as the investigation is ongoing.
