WOODSTOCK — Chief Robbie Blish wishes to provide the following statement regarding the findings of the Vermont Attorney General’s Office in its investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Woodstock earlier this year.
“Following an independent review of a shooting involving Woodstock Police Sgt. Joseph Swanson on June 14, 2022, the Attorney General’s Office and the Grand Isle State’s Attorney have concluded that the circumstances warranted the use of deadly force, and that Sgt. Swanson was ultimately acting in defense of his own safety and the safety of those around him.
“No officer ever wants to use lethal force against another human being, but can, unfortunately, be left with no other choice in instances like the incident that occurred on June 14.
“I would like to thank the Vermont State Police, Attorney General’s Office and State’s Attorney for their thorough investigation into this incident. These kinds of intensive reviews are essential to ensuring a full understanding of the facts and circumstances of cases like these, which is critical to maintaining accountability, transparency and the trust of our community.”
