LOWELL — Acting Superintendent Barry Golner is pleased to announce that the Lowell Police Youth Services Program is offering a free Ultimate Frisbee program to Lowell youth in grades 5 to 8.
Organized in collaboration with Lowell Public Schools and the Lowell Fire Department, the Ultimate Frisbee program will visit the city’s middle schools this spring, providing students with an opportunity to play outdoors, with equipment provided, and get to know first responders.
The program has already visited the Sullivan School, Robinson School and Butler School. It will visit the Stoklosa Middle School (with Bartlett Middle School students invited to participate) on May 18 and 20, the Pyne Arts Magnet School on May 25 and 27, and June 1 and 3, and the STEM Academy on June 8 and 10. Each session will be held after school, and lasts about 90 minutes.
Lowell Police employees and other volunteers who staff the program include Sgt. Mike Marshall, Lowell Public Schools Teacher Kevin Sheehan, Lowell Fire Department Lt. Kevin Dillon, and Lowell Firefighter Adam Dowling. The Lowell Recreation Department has also provided support and staffing.
The program is one of several initiatives organized by the Lowell Police Youth Services Program, which seeks to create opportunities for all city youth to participate in free after-school activities, athletics and other ventures that emphasize health and wellness, while also experiencing positive interactions with police officers.
“I would like to thank Lowell Public Schools, the Lowell Fire Department, the Lowell Recreation Department and all of our community partners and volunteers who have made this program possible,” said Acting Superintendent Golner. “We have been very pleased by the response to our Youth Services Programs so far, and we look forward to working with even more community partners to engage the youth of Lowell in positive ways that help to build character and confidence.”
