GROVELAND — Police Chief Jeffrey Gillen and Fire Chief Robert Valentine report that the Groveland Police and Fire Departments responded to a serious traumatic incident this evening involving a teenager riding a horse at a local riding establishment.
At approximately 6 p.m. Friday, Groveland Police and Fire responded to a 911 call for a report of a serious medical emergency at a private horse farm and riding school on King Street.
Groveland firefighters arrived within minutes and found a 16-year-old girl who was unresponsive. Rescuers determined that she had been riding a horse at the farm when the horse apparently spooked and rolled over, landing on top of the rider.
First responders immediately began to render aid to the victim and requested a medical helicopter for transport. A landing zone for the helicopter was established at the Pines Recreational baseball fields nearby.
The parents of the victim were immediately notified.
An ambulance from Trinity E.M.S. Inc. arrived at the farm and transported the victim to the landing zone. The victim was transported to a Boston hospital with serious injuries.
The West Newbury Fire Department responded with an engine and assisted at the landing zone.
“I would like to thank all rescuers who responded to this serious incident, including Groveland Police and Fire, West Newbury Fire and Trinity medics,” Chief Valentine said. “Everyone involved worked together to quickly render aid to the patient and get her on board the medical helicopter efficiently.”
