TAUNTON — Chief Edward J. Walsh and the Taunton Police Department would like to provide important information about the City of Taunton’s Summer Celebration at Hopewell Park this Friday.
On Friday, Aug. 27, from 5-9 p.m., Mayor Shauna O’Connell, the Mayor’s Worthy Cause, and the Parks and Recreation Department will host the City of Taunton’s annual Summer Celebration at Hopewell Park.
The City of Taunton’s Summer Celebration will feature a K-9 presentation, sack races, games and more. GQ and The Lady will perform live beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a fireworks display at 8:30 p.m.
Residents should note that the fireworks display is sanctioned and approved by the City of Taunton and will last about 30 minutes. The area around the launch site will be restricted to keep people safe. Pedestrians and vehicles will not have access to this area.
Chief Walsh respectfully asks that residents DO NOT call 9-1-1 to report noise or fireworks complaints related to the city event, as it is imperative that 9-1-1 lines remain open for true emergencies.
“Just like many of our residents, we are looking forward to everyone in town coming together to celebrate the end of the summer,” Chief Walsh said. “During this event, we tend to see an increase in visitors, so we ask that everyone follows the appropriate parking and traffic rules in the area of Hopewell and Hamilton so that the event can run as smoothly as possible.”
To assist with traffic concerns, GATRA will provide a free shuttle service throughout the event. The shuttle will pick up at the Pleasant Street lot next to the Taunton Public Library, and at Court Street, with drop-off at Hopewell Park.
During the Summer Celebration event, the Taunton Police Department reminds residents to be aware of these key safety tips:
- Don’t drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Be mindful of pedestrians
- Attend organized and permitted fireworks displays only
- Report illegal fires to the police
- Remember: alcohol/drugs and fireworks do not mix
- Keep pets indoors
- Properly secure any outdoor animals
Attendees are also advised that Taunton Police officers will be stationed in the area. Should anyone need assistance from the Taunton Police Department, feel free to approach one of these officers as they will be more than willing to assist.
The Taunton Police Department wishes everyone a safe and happy Summer Celebration!
