Road Closures Downtown, Drivers Asked to Avoid Area
TAUNTON — Chief Edward J. Walsh reports that the Taunton Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian Tuesday night.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., Taunton Police were called about an erratic driver that struck a pedestrian on Main Street, near Cedar Street.
Responding officers located a woman who was suffering from serious injuries. The 58-year-old Taunton woman was transported by ambulance to Morton Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
After the woman was struck, the 42-year-old male driver from Taunton, who was operating a Chevrolet SUV, allegedly sped away from the scene, and a short distance further struck a vehicle on Summer Street causing his SUV to overturn.
The SUV driver suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening and was transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton.
Main Street in Taunton is currently closed from School Street to Cedar Street. Summer Street is also closed from Main Street to Spring Street. The roads will remain closed while the scene is still active. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
The Taunton Fire Department, State Police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and the State Police Crime Prevention and Control (CPAC) Unit responded to the scene.
The incident remains under active investigation and while the driver’s arrest is likely, no arrest has been made at this time. No further information, including the identities of the victim and suspect, is available at this time and all further inquiries should be referred to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
