Bedford Police and Recreation Departments Celebrate Conclusion of Annual Basketball League
BEDFORD — Chief Robert Bongiorno is pleased to announce the conclusion of the fifth season of the Bedford Police-Recreation Basketball League.
The season concluded Thursday, March 29, with a championship victory by the Red Team, which was coached by Bedford Police Sgt. Jeff Wardwell and Officer Tim Pike. The seniors also secured a 46-45 victory in the traditional end-of-season game against the league’s coaches.
For the last five years, members of the Bedford Police Department have volunteered their time to coach players in grades nine through 12 who don’t play for their high school teams. This year there were 64 players and 10 coaches who participated in the eight game regular season and playoffs.
Officer Steven Waite served as the league commissioner and worked closely with the Recreation Department to organize and facilitate another successful season.
“This league has become a Bedford tradition, and it’s a lot of fun for officers, players and spectators alike,” Youth Program Coordinator Nikki Taylor said. “The coaches put so much energy into the league and we’re so thankful for the entire department’s commitment to these students.”
Jefferson Aweh-Kisob earned the league’s MVP award, while Alex Puglielli took home the Outstanding Tournament Player Award.
“The basketball league is one of the highlights of each year for our department, and it’s something we all look forward to being involved with,” Chief Bongiorno added. “I want to congratulate all of the coaches and players for another great season.”
