Wakefield Police Respond After Person Injured By Fireworks
WAKEFIELD — Chief Rick Smith reports that the Wakefield Police Department responded after a woman suffered severe injuries after setting off fireworks Tuesday.
On Tuesday, July 4, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Wakefield police officers responded to the playground near Wakefield Common for a report of a fireworks-related injury. Upon their arrival, officers conducted a preliminary investigation and determined that the woman in her 50’s had lost several of her fingers while trying to set off powerful M-100 fireworks.
“This is the second straight year that someone has been seriously hurt while using fireworks illegally,” Chief Smith said. “The town goes to great lengths to put on an organized fireworks display, so there is absolutely no excuse for putting yourself and others in harm’s way by setting fireworks off on your own.”
No other injuries were reported as a result of the illegal fireworks, despite thousands of people nearby who were leaving the official fireworks show.
