Melrose Police to Hold R.A.D. Class for Women
MELROSE — Chief Michael L. Lyle announces that the Melrose Police Department will host a Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) course for women.
The program is designed to teach personal safety skills. It begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, and progresses to hands-on physical defense techniques.
“These are certainly valuable skills for women in our community to have in the event that they’re placed in an uncomfortable or potentially dangerous situation,” Chief Lyle said. “We encourage all those who are interested to sign up.”
WHEN
March 12 and 26 (must commit to both days), from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
WHERE
Mount Hood Golf Course Club House, 100 Slayton Road.
WHAT
Participants in the program will learn a wide range of tactics, including verbal techniques, ground defense options, escaping from bear hugs and choke hold, and much more. The practical techniques are designed to maximize the strengths of a woman’s body and build upon existing instinctive responses to provide women with effective self-defense options. At the end of the course, women will have the opportunity to practice their skills in realistic simulation exercises.
Courses are taught by nationally certified instructors and are suitable for women of all ages and abilities. R.A.D. has trained more than 900,000 women since the program began in 1989.
For more information, or to sign up for the course, contact Detective Dan Ehlers at 781-979-4432 or dehlers@cityofmelrose.org. Space is limited, so residents are encouraged to sign up early.
