BOURNE — The Bournedale Elementary School community gathered for a special event last week that celebrated students in each of the school’s grade levels.
The annual Light It Up You event was held Thursday, April 7 at the school. More than 300 children and adults were on hand and visited the several stations set up.
“This event is such a fun and engaging way for our community to come together and focus on all of the great ways our students are unique,” Principal Liz Carpenito said. “This has always been one of our favorite events and we’re so happy to have been able to return to an in-person event after not holding it for a few years. Seeing the smiling faces of the students and watching everyone learn about one another makes the event so special.”
Stations set up around the school included an “I Am Me!” table, a coloring table featuring the children’s book “The Jelly Donut Difference: Sharing Kindness with the World,” a “calm corner,” tables with information on Autism and Down syndrome awareness, presentations from Bourne first responders and members of the Bourne PTA, snacks and refreshments, and much more.
The Light It Up You event has been expanded in recent years to include all members of the school community, to celebrate the differences in everyone.
“The Light It Up You event fits perfectly with our district’s Strategic Objective of promoting equity and inclusion for our entire school community,” Assistant Superintendent Barbara Starkie said. “Celebrating what makes our students different and unique allows them to learn from one another and grow not only as young learners but also as people, and we’re so grateful for the hard work that went into making the event such a big success.”
