Rowley Water Department Repairs Broken Water Main
ROWLEY — The Rowley Water Department reports that a broken water main was repaired in town yesterday and would like to advise residents to run their cold water taps if they see discoloration in their water today.
At approximately noon, Monday, June 11, the Rowley Water Department was notified of a water main break on Hillside Street.
A six-inch main broke causing an estimated 1,300 gallons per minute to flow out into the street.
The Water Department immediately responded and was able to halt the flow of water by about 12:40 p.m. A crew of six workers then successfully repaired the broken main, and water was restored to residents in the area around 7 p.m.
The main was then flushed out via a nearby hydrant overnight until 7 a.m.
A portion of Hillside Street was closed from 12:40-8 p.m. while the repairs were made. The street is currently open and will remain open while road repairs are made.
If any residents experience brown discoloration in their water, they should run their cold water tap for a few minutes until it becomes clear. Residents who experience cloudiness in their water should not be alarmed. The cloudy discoloration is from air that entered into the pipes and it is safe to drink.
If anyone experiences ongoing issues, they should contact the Rowley Water Department at 978-948-2640.
“We thank the residents in town for their patience while the repairs were being made,” said Primary Operator Rob Swiniarski. “Our guys did a great job of getting the water shut off and fixing the main as quickly as possible.”
