Andover Provides Resources for Residents Ahead of Anniversary of Gas Explosions
ANDOVER — Ahead of the anniversary of the gas disaster that affected homeowners, businesses and community members last September, Director of Public Health Thomas Carbone would like to provide several resources concerning behavioral health for those who may be in need.
“We know that the anniversaries for traumatic events can be difficult to relive,” Carbone said. “With everything that encompassed the gas explosions last year, we want to provide our community members with all the resources they may need to cope with negative or stressful emotions.”
The national @Distressline (call 1-800-985-5990 or text TalkWithUs to 66746) offers 24/7 emotional support.
Strength After is an initiative of @Distressline where anyone struggling after natural or human-caused disasters can read and view stories of strength from other survivors and responders.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration offers the following tips to help those coping with stress after a disaster:
- Remember you’re not alone. There are people who can help support you. Do not be afraid to ask for help.
- Focus on the basics. Remember to eat healthy foods, exercise and get good rest.
- Take steps to reduce anxiety. Take media breaks — constantly checking social media or watching news about the disaster may cause you to feel anxious or overwhelmed.
— Talk to children. They may feel sad, worried or scared. Let them know it’s OK to have these feelings.
— Try to set a normal routine for yourself and family. - Be patient. There’s no one way to think, feel or respond to a disaster.
- Reach out. Giving and receiving support is a positive action that can help you regain feelings of connection and safety.
