Easton Police Undergo Voluntary Assessment for Re-Accreditation
EASTON — Chief Gary Sullivan is pleased to share that a team of assessors from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) visited the Easton Police Department this week for a re-accreditation assessment.
The team visited the department on Tuesday, Aug. 27, Wednesday, Aug. 28, and today, and reviewed the agency’s policies, procedures, operations and facilities.
The verification by the Assessment Team that the department meets MPAC’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain or retain state Accreditation — a self-initiated evaluation process by which police departments strive to meet and maintain standards and best practices that have been established in the law enforcement profession, by those in law enforcement.
The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program consists of 257 mandatory standards as well as 125 optional standards. In order to achieve accreditation status, the Department must meet all applicable mandatory standards as well as a percentage of the optional standards.
The Easton Police Department earned Accreditation for the first time in 2011. Accreditation is up for renewal every three years, and this is the fourth time the department has undergone the re-accreditation process.
Achieving Accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. Anyone interested in learning more about this program is invited to call Chief Sullivan, Deputy Chief Keith Boone or Accreditation Manager Sgt. Leonard Coe at 508-230-3322.
“Our department has been committed to this process since the mid-1990s beginning with Certification. Since that time, we have been awarded with Accreditation a total of four times now,” Chief Sullivan said. “We were told today that the assessment team will make a recommendation to the Commission that we be re-accredited and I am very proud of our department for earning this award for the fourth time. It’s important to me because we hold ourselves to a very high standard. Being awarded with Accreditation is affirmation that we are being recognized by our peers as a professional organization which holds itself to that high standard. Our department’s police officers, support staff, and civilians should all be very proud of this accomplishment.”
The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission will officially vote on the Easton Police Department’s application in September and there will also be an awards ceremony that month.
