Lynnfield Center Water District Encourages Residents to Join National Fix a Leak Week
LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield Center Water District is pleased to invite residents to participate in nationwide Fix a Leak Week.
Fix a Leak Week, which takes place from March 18-24, aims to raise awareness of the importance of locating and repairing in-home leaks in order to conserve water and save money. The event is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
According to the EPA, the average household’s leaks can account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water wasted per year, and 10 percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons ore more per day. Worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets and other broken valves are among the most common household leaks. They’re also among the easiest to fix.
In order to help residents locate and address leaks, the Lynnfield Center Water District wishes to share these tips from the EPA and the district:
- Take a look at your water usage during a colder month, such as January or February. If a family of four exceeds 8,000 gallons per month, there may be leaks.
- Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.
- The district has tablets available at the office that can help identify toilet leaks.
- Examine faucet gaskets and pipe fittings for any water on the outside of the pipe to check for surface leaks.
- WaterSense partners have guides and videos that you might find helpful in finding and fixing leaks.
