WAYLAND — Chief Neil McPherson reports that the Wayland Fire Department responded to and extinguished a two-alarm fire Wednesday afternoon.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30 at approximately 12:23 p.m., Wayland Fire responded to 31 Leary St. for reports of a fire at a two-story home.
Crews arrived on scene at 12:26 p.m. and observed heavy smoke coming from the roof of the home.
Wayland Fire immediately began an aggressive interior attack and struck a second alarm to bring additional personnel to the scene. Crews quickly determined that the smoke and fire were coming from inside a portion of the wall where pipes are located, running through each floor of the home, and were able to safely extinguish the flames.
One person was home at the time of the fire and was able to safely evacuate before the arrival of first responders.
One Wayland firefighter was transported to a local hospital with injuries believed to be non-life threatening.
Mutual aid was provided by the Weston, Framingham, Natick, and Sudbury Fire Departments. The Wellesley and Lincoln Fire Departments provided station coverage.
The home suffered significant smoke and water damage, totaling approximately $200,000. Two people are displaced and being assisted by family and friends.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the fire does not appear suspicious and that the cause was potentially a result of ongoing home renovations.
The incident remains under investigation by the Wayland Fire Department and the District 14 Fire Investigation Team.
