BARNSTABLE — Superintendent Sara Ahern, Principal Jason Conetta and Senior Maritime Science and Coast Guard JROTC Instructor Captain Rich Schultz are proud to share that Barnstable High School recently hosted its United States Coast Guard Establishment Ceremony.
The ceremony on Friday, Oct. 25 celebrated the new United States Coast Guard Junior ROTC (CGJROTC) unit at Barnstable High School (BHS).
Thirty-one CGJROTC cadets and students participated in the ceremony establishing the BHS unit, which began in September.
The CGJROTC unit at BHS is one of 14 nationwide and the first JROTC unit established in southeastern Massachusetts and the Northeast Region. BHS submitted an application to host the unit to the Coast Guard in Washington, D.C., and was selected in early 2024.
Guests from the local community attended the ceremony, including elected officials, community leaders, Barnstable Public School officials, Coast Guard members from across Cape Cod and Rhode Island, Massachusetts Maritime Academy staff and cadets and CGJROTC program officials from Washington, D.C.
The high school pep band also performed the “Red Hawks Fight Song” during the ceremony.
The JROTC program teaches students to lead a service-minded life and about leadership, offering opportunities to take on new roles and experiences.
Other units across the country are located in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware, Alabama, Mississippi, Illinois, California, Texas and Hawaii.
