WOBURN — Principal Kristen Maloney is pleased to share that Hurld Wyman Elementary School recently celebrated Read Across America Day, incentivizing a love for reading within students and staff alike.
Read Across America Day — celebrated on March 2 (Dr. Seuss’ birthday) — is a day for faculty, staff, and students to come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading.
Schools, libraries and communities across the country recognize the National Education Association’s “Read Across America” program, an annual, week-long reading campaign centered around March 2, which calls for children to celebrate literacy through programming, events and activities.
This year, the national theme is “Create and Celebrate a Nation of Diverse Readers.”
At Hurld Wyman Elementary, Grade 1 students received a special visit from Mayor Mike Concannon on Friday, March 1, who read to them in celebration of Read Across America Day.
Mayor Concannon selected one of his favorite books, “Make Way for Ducklings” by Robert McCloskey. The book tells the story of two mallard ducks who raise their brood of ducklings on an island in the lagoon of the Boston Public Garden.
“Celebrating reading and literacy is something we try to instill every day in Woburn,” said Principal Maloney, “but Read Across America Day gives us an opportunity to do something special to instill a love of reading within our students, staff, and greater school community. A huge thank you to Mayor Concannon for taking time out of his schedule to visit with our students. They loved every second of his visit and are hopeful he will come again!”
