CANAAN – Superintendent Amanda Isabelle and Principal Tina Fleming are proud to share that a team of Mascoma Valley Regional High School students competed in Round One of the Granite State Challenge.
The Mascoma team, comprised of senior Captain Gage Lambert, seniors Logan Escano-Smith and Liam Finger, and junior Lidia Josephson, competed in a Round One match against Bow High School. The match aired on New Hampshire PBS on Thursday, March 9.
The team alternates are sophomore Sydney Pettus and junior Breanna Houston. The team is coached by John Sweetland.
Over the course of four rounds, teams are prompted with various types of questions that cover history, geography, science, math, language arts, fine arts, current events, entertainment, sports, and New Hampshire.
Mascoma team members used their knowledge to answer several questions throughout the match, including those about Supreme Court rulings, mechanisms, solving the area of shapes, historical figures, and the names of cities and towns in New Hampshire.
Both teams performed exceptionally well, coming to a 360-point tie at the end of Round 4. The win came down to the final question: “This 16th-century Flemish cartographer is known for his geographical map which flattened the globe into a two-dimensional map.” Bow narrowly took the win by correctly answering “Mercator,” making the final score 380-360.
“We are extremely proud of the Mascoma team’s performance. Bow High School was a tough challenger, but our students remained persistent and displayed their quick thinking and intelligence,” said Superintendent Isabelle. “Congrats to our team for demonstrating remarkable teamwork and composure, and thank you to Mr. Sweetland for his guidance and support.”
Granite State Challenge is hosted by Joe Cannon, Bow High School teacher and former coach for Bedford High School.
