CANTON — Superintendent Derek Folan is pleased to announce that Meghan Byrne has been appointed permanently as the District’s Director of Student Services.
Byrne has been serving as the Interim Director of Student Services since July 2022. Her permanent appointment was approved by the Canton School Committee during its Dec. 15 meeting.
As Interim Director, Byrne oversaw Special Education, Section 504, Multilingual Learners, Nursing and Guidance departments and staff. Additionally, she was responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, analyzing data for student performance and disproportionality, assisting in facilitating the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Tiered Focused Monitoring self-evaluation process, Circuit Breaker claiming and budgeting, and designing and implementing professional development.
“Meghan has shown over the past several months her clear ability to lead our Student Services Department, and I am thrilled that she was appointed to the position permanently,” Superintendent Folan said. “She has shown incredible talent in collaborating with our staff, parents and guardians, and students, and a necessary skill set in leadership and administration. It was clear throughout our search process that Meghan was the best choice for this position, and we look forward to having her lead our Student Services Department forward.”
Before serving in the interim position, Byrne was the District’s Assistant Director of Student Services, a position she held since January 2020. As Assistant Director of Student Services, Byrne was responsible for overseeing students from ages 3 to 22 in out-of-district placements, including annual reviews and triennial evaluations, site visits, and progress meetings. She contributed to effective transitions for students and their families, developed and evaluated programs and services for students with disabilities, supervised and supported team chairs, and more.
Byrne previously served in the District as a team chair/administrator from 2016 to 2020. Before joining CPS, she was a special education teacher in the Rockland Public Schools and a lead therapist/special educator for the Nashoba Learning Group.
Byrne received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Northeastern University with a major in Elementary and Secondary Education, and her Bachelor of Arts from York College of Pennsylvania with a major in Political Science. She is a member of the Massachusetts Administrators of Special Education and the Council for Exceptional Children.
Superintendent Folan also extends his thanks to the members of the Interview Committee, especially Co-Chair Julie Shore, as well as the parents/guardians, students and staff who provided feedback and participated in meet-and-greets during the process.
