Southeastern’s stepping dance team, READY S.E.T. STEP, will perform on Sunday at an attraction event hosted by StiggityStackz Worldwide Inc at the World of Dance Championship Series for Boston. While the team is not competing, their participation in the event is a celebration of the inaugural year of the step team.
Students will be able to learn more about the step dance community and interact with other dance teams as well as universities that will have representatives present, including historically black colleges and universities.
Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
READY S.E.T. STEP was started with the purpose of learning and sharing the historical value of stepping with the school community. Stepping has a direct correlation to Black History. In stepping, the body becomes an instrument by using footsteps, claps and spoken word to produce complex poly-rhythms. Through the core value of peer synchronicity, the team aims to create a space for all students to have a sense of belonging while celebrating cultures, welcoming diversity and embodying inclusivity.
READY S.E.T. STEP was started this school year by Southeastern cosmetology instructor Briana Brown. Brown is the first African American cosmetology instructor at Southeastern. She was recognized with an African American Trailblazer Service Award at the third annual Juneteenth festival in Attleboro this past June. The award honors ordinary citizens who have made outstanding civic accomplishments and significant contributions in various fields in the southeastern region of Massachusetts.
