EASTON — Superintendent Lisha Cabral, Athletic Director Ryan Gordy and Principal Kelly Cavanaugh are pleased to report that Oliver Ames High School graduate David MacKinnon returned to the school last week to speak to current students and staff about his time at OA and his journey to play Major League Baseball.
MacKinnon graduated from Oliver Ames High School in 2013, where he played soccer and baseball. He graduated as one of the most decorated athletes in OA athletics history. Of note, he earned the following:
Baseball: Hockomock League MVP, Brockton Enterprise Player of the Year, Boston Globe and Boston Herald All Scholastic, All State/All New England, Hockomocksports.com Player of the Year.
Soccer: Hockomock League MVP, Brockton Enterprise Player of the Year, Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic, All State/All New England, All American.
“Having a real big-leaguer come to our school and talk about his experiences and what it took to make it to be a professional athlete is a great experience for our students, but to have it be a homegrown kid like David who graduated from this very school made it all the more relatable and special,” Principal Cavanaugh said.
After graduating high school, MacKinnon enrolled at the University of Hartford where he played both soccer and baseball for all four years. In 2015, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League and was named a league all-star. He returned to the CCBL in 2016 with the Bourne Braves.
During his senior baseball season at Hartford in 2017, MacKinnon batted .327 in more than 50 games. After the season, he was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 32nd round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
During his time with the Angels, MacKinnon played with MLB superstars such as Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.
MacKinnon is currently in the Oakland Athletics organization.
“We thank David for coming and sharing his experiences with our students,” Superintendent Cabral said. “We hope it was another reminder to our students that an Oliver Ames education can take them far, and that there’s nothing they can’t do if they try their best and put in the effort.”
