CANTON — Superintendent Derek Folan and Principal Jonathan Mulhern are pleased to announce that the Galvin Middle School held a successful fundraiser recently to raise money for a variety of programs and services for students.
The FIT4FUND$ event, which is sponsored by the GMS Canton Association of Parents and Teachers (CAPT) and serves as the sole CAPT fundraiser at GMS, supports student learning throughout the entire school year. GMS held a pep rally on Sept. 15 to kick off this year’s event, where students received information on what FIT4FUND$ is all about and ways they can raise funds.
Students then collected donations from friends, family and local businesses, with the proceeds going to the CAPT organization.
The drive ended on Friday, Sept. 30, when donations were collected and Galvin students from all grades took part in wellness-based games and activities during the school day. This year’s event featured nine wellness stations set up at the school, including a bike route, basketball, capture the flag, dodgeball, skateboarding, rollerblading, walking, and (new this year) yoga.
The goal of FIT4FUND$ is to have 100 percent participation among the student body, which the school achieved this year. In total, more than $42,000 was raised.
“We are thrilled with the funds we raised this year as part of this annual fundraising tradition,” Principal Mulhern said. “We put the fundraiser on hold for 2020 due to the pandemic, but it has returned in full and this year we raised quite an impressive amount. Our entire school is grateful to the generosity of our parents, families and greater Canton community, as well as to our CAPT organization for all they do throughout the year.”
Every dollar raised through FIT4FUND$ goes directly back to the school through the Galvin CAPT. The organization supports the school through programming, field trips, special events, supplies for students and teachers, and more. As an example, CAPT sponsored educational theatrical performances last year related to Anne Frank and Martin Luther King, and due to the success of the performances they are returning again this year.
“A special thanks to all the students and families who collected donations, and a huge shout out and thank you to the faculty’s support in running the events of the day,” Galvin CAPT President Catherine Hoberg said. “Thanks to the funds raised, CAPT will be able to support student programming, guest speakers, field trip transportation, teacher appreciation and other enrichment opportunities for all grades. It was great to see the smiles on the students’ faces throughout the day.”
CAPT will be wrapping up the FIT4FUND$ event with raffle prizes and homework passes being announced and distributed during lunch periods later in the month.
