BOURNE — Roughly 100 Bourne Public School students in grades K-8 took part in a special program this month to not only sharpen their academic skills but also engage in fun and enriching activities led by BPS teachers.
The Bourne Elementary and Middle School Summer Academy Program runs for two to four weeks. It is a no-cost opportunity for students in grades K-8 to reinforce their academic skills in both math and English Language Arts. Students were invited based on end-of-year data and teacher recommendations. The program, funded by Elementary and Secondary School Education Relief III funds, included transportation for students. Teachers in Math, ELA, and Special Education from the Bournedale Elementary, Bourne Intermediate, and Bourne Middle schools led the program.
The Bourne Elementary Summer Academy ran from Monday, July 11 to Thursday, July 14 and Monday, July 18 to Thursday, July 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Bournedale Elementary School’s Academy was a Summer Safari theme, while the Bourne Intermediate School’s Academy was a Summer Spectacular theme.
The Bourne Middle School Summer Academy, a four week program, ran Tuesdays through Thursdays throughout July and will continue into August. Middle School teachers created the four-week curriculum and presented the accompanying lessons, all while making Math and ELA fun!
“The Bourne Summer Academy is a tremendous opportunity for our students to gain extra support during the summer and prepare for the upcoming school year,” Superintendent Quinlan-Zhou said. “We would like to thank all the individuals and staff members who came together to make this program possible, and our students for embracing a love of learning even during their summer vacation.”
BPS Summer Academy Programs were well supported by Bourne High School students engaged in the High School Senior Internship Education Project (HSSIEP). These Grade 11 and 12 interns spent their days helping both teachers and students with a myriad of activities. HSSIEP, a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) funded program, offers students who are interested in learning the ins and outs of education opportunities to do so while getting paid.
Bourne High School’s HSSIEP students are under the tutelage of BHS teacher Mrs. Ann Marie Strode.
“Mrs. Strode’s BHS HSSIEP interns were a wonderful addition to our summer classes. Our BHS interns were great role models for our young Canalmen,” said Assistant Superintendent Barbara Starkie.
