GEORGETOWN — Acting Chief Chuck Savage reports the Georgetown Fire Department responded to a fire in a home on Canterbury Drive and an unrelated medical call while mutual aid partners responded to a lighting strike on Saturday.
On Saturday at 11:48 a.m., the Georgetown Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 12 Canterbury Drive. Car 1 arrived on scene at 11:51 a.m., and reported fire coming out of a vent in front of the home.
Engine 2 arrived at 11:53 a.m., and companies entered the home and found a fire in a utility closet in the basement, which they quickly knocked down. Crews remained on scene to overhaul the basement and ensure the fire was out.
At 12:12 p.m., mutual aid partners that were covering Georgetown Fire Department stations were dispatched to a report of a lightning strike outside a home at 11 Silvermine Lane. Mutual aid companies determined the lightning strike had blown fuses, but that there was no fire inside the home as a result. There were no reported injuries.
At 12:23 p.m., the Georgetown Fire Department also responded to a medical aid call on Pond Street.
The fire in the home on Canterbury Drive was declared under control at 12:32 p.m. The State Fire Marshal’s Office joined the investigation into that fire but the cause remains undetermined. There were no reported injuries, but residents of the home were displaced and will be staying with family in the area.
Mutual aid was provided by firefighters from Newbury, Groveland, Newburyport, West Newbury, Rowley and Boxford.
“I would like to express our thanks to our mutual aid partners, who we know we can rely on when multiple incidents occur,” said Acting Chief Savage. “The crew of Engine 2 demonstrated the importance of quick response times as they prevented a basement fire from spreading, and the mutual aid system came through for Georgetown when it was needed.”
