Groveland Police and Fire Departments Respond to Hazardous Materials Incident
GROVELAND — Police Chief Jeffrey Gillen and Interim Fire Chief Joe Santapaola report that the Groveland Police and Fire Departments are at the scene of a hazardous materials incident on Salem Street in South Groveland.
Police have determined that there is no threat or danger to the public at this time and no residents are being evacuated as a result of this incident.
At approximately 6:45 p.m., the Groveland Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of Washington and Salem Streets for a report of a possible gas leak. Upon arrival, first responders came upon containers of a crystallized substance and of a flammable substance at 748 Salem St., resulting in an order from Groveland public safety leaders for a hazmat response to the scene to investigate.
The declaration of a hazardous materials incident results in the dispatch of specialized state and regional units to Groveland with firefighters and technicians with advanced training and equipment.
The Groveland Police and Fire Departments will release more information as it becomes available. Traffic on Salem Street has been temporarily limited to one lane.
In addition to the Groveland Police and Fire Departments, a Hazardous Materials Response Team from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services was on scene until approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday.
