Melrose Police to Reward Children for Practicing Bicycle Safety
MELROSE — Chief Michael Lyle is pleased to announce that the Melrose Police Department has partnered with nine local businesses to organize the city’s first Summer Bicycle Safety Program.
This August, Melrose Police Officers will reward local children who wear their helmets while they ride their bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, roller skates and scooters. Children “caught” wearing their helmets will receive a “citation” to redeem a free item from a local business.
The program will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 6 and end on Sunday, Sept. 1.
“Our goal is to recognize kids who are being safe and wearing their helmets, and to raise awareness about helmet laws and safety,” Chief Lyle said. “We’re excited to launch this program for the first time, and to connect with the community while spreading an important message.”
Businesses that have partnered with the Melrose Police Department on the bicycle safety initiative include: Gabriella’s Itallian Pizzaria, Melrose House of Pizza, Lisa’s Pizzeria, Cloud Nine, Jeff Carbone Insurance Agency, Petrone’s Pizza, Kennedy’s Ice Cream Bar, Edward Jones and Common Market.
Members of the Melrose Police Department participating in the program will hand out the “citations” in full uniform, in marked cruisers or bicycles.
