Kearsarge’s Sutton Central Elementary Partners with Boys and Girls Club of Sutton to Teach Students Leadership
NEW LONDON –Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is pleased to share that students at Sutton Central Elementary School are honing their leadership skills thanks to a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Sutton.
The Boys and Girls Club of Sutton is an extension site of the Boys and Girls Club of Central New Hampshire in Concord, and oversees the after school program at Sutton Central Elementary School. For the second year, five fourth and fifth grade students in the program had the opportunity to become Junior Leaders.
Students who become Junior Leaders are assigned two to three jobs that they are responsible for daily, such as cleaning up snack materials or running arts and crafts activities.
Junior Leaders have the opportunity to create and oversee activities at the after school program, and participate in monthly meetings to discuss goals for the next month and any concerns that may have come up.
They also observe and take notes when Boys and Girls Club of Sutton staff members resolve conflicts among students at the program to learn how to handle similar situations themselves, and act as role models for younger students and new program members.
The program was first introduced by Danika Rainie, the Boys and Girls Club of Sutton site coordinator for the Sutton Central after school program.
“The Junior Leaders program is a great opportunity for older students to practice their leadership skills and act as role models for our younger students,” Principal Christine Downing said. “We’re fortunate to have had the opportunity to partner on our after school program with the Boys and Girls Club of Sutton, which has been a great success thanks to Danika and her dedication to fostering a supportive, fun environment for our students.”
Junior Leaders are chosen each fall after an interview and application process.
