Irish American Police Officers Association Announces 2019 Award Recipients
BELMONT– The Irish American Police Officers Association (IAPOA) is pleased to announce its plans to recognize dozens of local law enforcement officers for their outstanding service this May at its annual awards dinner.
The 20th Annual IAPOA awards dinner will be held on Saturday, May 4 at the Malden Irish American Club Hall. There will be approximately 50 awards given to members of police departments throughout Massachusetts at the event, honoring those individuals for various acts of Valor, Life Saving, Investigations, Meritorious Service, Community Service and Humanitarian work.
“These award recipients have exhibited a remarkable dedication to serving and protecting their communities, and have gone above and beyond to perform police work of the highest quality,” said IAPOA President Robert Sweetland. “This awards dinner is a wonderful way to recognize and celebrate their efforts, and to honor the men and women that keep our communities safe every day.”
Family, colleagues, friends, and police leaders from across the state will be present at the awards dinner to honor the award recipients for their outstanding work.
The IAPOA’s most prestigious award, the Medal of Honor, will be presented posthumously to Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon and Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna. Sgt. Gannon was killed in the line of duty in April 2018, and Sgt. Chesna was killed in the line of duty in July 2018.
Winthrop Police Detective Michael Delehanty has also been chosen to receive the Community Service award posthumously.

Tickets to the 2019 IAPOA awards dinner are $45 each, and can be purchased by emailing a check to the IAPOA at 3 Brighton St., Belmont or by emailing events@irishamericanpolice.org.
The awards dinner sells out of tickets each year, and the IAPOA encourages those interested in attending to purchase theirs soon. No tickets will be available for purchase at the door on the day of the event.
Businesses, individuals, and organizations are also welcome to sponsor the awards dinner, and can do so by emailing events@irishamericanpolice.org.
