MHS Assistant Principal Stephen Fogarty Appointed as Director of Co-Curricular, Physical Education, Health and Wellness
MELROSE — Superintendent of Schools Cyndy Taymore announces that Melrose High School Assistant Principal Stephen Fogarty has been appointed as Director of Co-Curricular, Physical Education, Health and Wellness.
Fogarty replaces Pat Ruggiero, the current Athletic Director/Director of Physical Education, Health, and Wellness who is retiring after 10 years in the district. He will begin in the new role on July 1 under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.
Along with overseeing all health and wellness programs in kindergarten through twelfth grade, and all athletics in grades nine through 12, Fogarty will manage all extra curricular activities in the district. This encompasses student interest, social, and academic clubs, including the performing and fine arts. He will also will provide instructional leadership to the district and support schools as they adapt to the ever evolving educational environment, while implementing program improvements.
“As we transition into reorganizing our administrative team in a way that is beneficial for student achievement and learning, we are excited to have Stephen Fogarty step into this new role, as he has excelled as Assistant Principal at MHS,” Superintendent Taymore said. “His experience and direction will help guide us through this transition while fostering growth within our wellness and health programs and co-curricular activities.”
Fogarty first started in the district in 1997 as a MHS science teacher, a position he remained in until 2001 when he became a wellness teacher. He transitioned into his current role as assistant principal in 2012.
Fogarty also currently serves as the Melrose Veteran Memorial Middle School Wresting Coach, and has done so since 2015. Prior to that, he was the Head Girls Track Coach at MHS (2006-2012), MHS Assistant Indoor Track Coach (2006-2007), MHS Strength and Conditioning Coach (1999-2012), MHS Assistant Wrestling Coach (1997-1998) and MHS Assistant Football Coach (1997-2012).
He holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Springfield College and a master’s degree in education from American International College.
“I am extremely excited to move into this position and utilize my knowledge and experience in areas that I have always been passionate about,” Fogarty said. “I look forward to working with students in my new role next year.”
The district will be posting the Assistant Principal job shortly, and Superintendent Taymore expects to be able to fill the position internally, thanks to the deep talent pool developed by the Melrose Public Schools.
