Andover Health Division Provides Measles and Mumps Vaccinations
ANDOVER – The Andover Health Division is offering measles and mumps vaccinations to residents after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed the first case of the measles in the Commonwealth this year in an individual who traveled to Massachusetts from Europe.
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can have serious health complications. Massachusetts has also recently seen a large outbreak of mumps on several college campuses. Both of these diseases can be prevented by the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine.
In light of these recent cases, the Andover Health Division is strongly urging residents to consult with their physicians to ensure they are up to date on their vaccines. Vaccination should especially be considered before any upcoming travel.
“These diseases are highly contagious and should be taken very seriously,” said Thomas Carbone, Andover Director of Public Health. “We are urging residents to make sure they are up to date on their MMR vaccine and to get vaccinated as soon as possible if they are not.”
If vaccination is needed, the health department will be offering the MMR vaccine to Andover residents, the cost of which may be covered by some health insurances. A limited amount of the vaccine will be available.
Please call the Andover Health Division at 978-623-8295 for cost information or to make an appointment.
