Bedford Firefighters Deliver Baby in Back of Ambulance This Morning
Baby Girl, Mother, Both Doing Well!
BOSTON — A pair of Bedford firefighters arrived in plenty of time, but a baby girl wasn’t about to wait for the ambulance to arrive at the hospital before making her debut in the world.
At 8:33 a.m. Thursday, Bedford 911 received a call for a woman in labor at her home. Firefighters from Bedford Ambulance 1 arrived four minutes later, and prepared the mother to go in the back of their ambulance to a Boston hospital.
They made it as far as the I-93 Southbound near the Sullivan Square exit before the firefighters successfully delivered a baby girl, in the back of the ambulance.
Firefighter Michael Sargent and Firefighter Brian Oates along with Paramedics Francis Mahoney and Keith Anderson from Armstrong Ambulance who were riding along with the Bedford crew, were credited for their coolness under pressure by Chief David Grunes.
“Firefighters Sargent and Oates fell back on their training and today helped bring another life into the world,” Chief Grunes said. “The baby girl was a little impatient, but that’s what we’re here for! I am just happy that mother and child are both doing well today.”
This was the second time Bedford first responders delivered a baby in less than a month. On May 7, Bedford police officers and firefighters delivered a baby at home. In that instance, two brothers, Police Officer Jon Busa and Firefighter Matt Busa teamed up to perform the delivery.
