Battle of the Bands Fundraiser Being Hosted by Irish American Police Officers Association

BELMONT — President Robert Sweetland is pleased to announce that the Irish American Police Officers Association (IAPOA) will be hosting a Battle of the Bands fundraiser next month.

The event will benefit Cops for Kids with Cancer and help pay for travel expenses for the IAPOA Pipes and Drums group to travel to Washington D.C. during National Police Week in May.

Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m.

WHERE:

Florian Hall, 55 Hallet St., Dorchester

WHO:

This event is for adults age 21 and older.

WHAT:

Three local Irish bands – Irish Whispa, Erin Og and Garda – will play for bragging rights as they help to raise money for two good causes.

• Cops for Kids with Cancer helps to provide assistance to families with children who have been stricken with cancer.
• The IAPOA Pipes and Drums band was recently selected to be the host pipe band during National Police Week 2019 in Washington D.C. and a portion of the proceeds will help to pay for the band’s travel expenses.

At the event, the bands will play a variety of Irish, pop and country music.

There will be a cash bar and snacks provided.

A silent auction will be held by Yesterday’s Legends with several sports items being auctioned off.

Tickets are $25 per person or $200 for a table of 10. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by emailing IrishAmericanPolice@yahoo.com. Those who would like to reserve a table should do so in advance of the event. Credit cards are accepted.

“It is a great honor to have our pipe band selected to play down at National Police Week next year,” Sweetland said. “It is an even greater honor to help raise money for Cops for Kids with Cancer. We hope to have a huge turnout next month and we know that the bands will be rocking the house that night.”

About Cops For Kids With Cancer:

In 2005, retired Boston Police Captain John Dow and his wife, Joan, wanted to find a way to support children with cancer who were being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital. Captain Dow, a cancer survivor, was sensitive to the needs of cancer patients and had a particular empathy for children undergoing difficult treatments. Soon after, the non-profit he founded, Cops For Kids With Cancer, began directing significant support to pediatric cancer patients at Massachusetts General Hospital. Cops For Kids With Cancer supports emergency assistance to families, events for patients and their families, and special “wishes” for teens, who are too old to be served by the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Captain Dow lost his battle with cancer in 2007, but his vision of supporting children and their families continues.
