Saugus Police Investigating Theft of Sewer Grates
SAUGUS — Police Chief Domenic J. DiMella reports that the Saugus Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance as it investigates the theft of several heavy sewer grates, which poses a significant public safety risk on town roadways.
Over the past two days, the department has received two calls reporting the theft of sewer grates and drain covers.
In the first incident, reported Wednesday night, it was reported that someone or some group stole eight sewer grades from the area of 1565 Broadway.
The second theft was reported by the Saugus Department of Public Works. Three sewer grates were stolen from Essex Street and the area around the Lynnhurst Elementary School.
Each grate weighs about 300 lbs. All of the grates were stolen from public roadways or public property.
The theft of sewer grates and drain covers poses a serious public safety hazard for motorists, bicyclist and pedestrians. The theft of roadway coverings near a school, where children regularly walk, is especially concerning.
The police department is asking for the public’s assistance. As always, if you see something, say something. Anyone who sees something or someone suspicious is urged to contact the Saugus Police Department at 781-941-1199 or by dialing 911 if they are observing something in real-time.
