Media Advisory: Burlington Police to Host Mock Crash at Burlington High School Tomorrow
BURLINGTON — Police Chief Michael Kent announces that the Burlington Police Department will be hosting a mock car crash at Burlington High School tomorrow morning.
The purpose of the event is to remind students of the consequences of making poor decisions behind the wheel. The event is held every two years for the junior and senior classes.
WHEN:
Tuesday, May 10 from 8:22 a.m. to 10 a.m.
WHERE:
Burlington High School, 123 Cambridge St.
WHO:
- Burlington Police Department
- Burlington Fire Department
- Boston Med Flight
- Burlington Public Schools
WHAT:
The mock crash will involve six student actors, who will portray: an impaired driver who killed someone behind the wheel, victims, and passengers in two vehicles. Emergency response will include the Burlington Police Department, Burlington Fire Department, and Boston MedFlight.
The program will start with a video showing what transpired before the crash. The students will then go outside to observe what actually happens in real time during a crash of this nature, including the emergency responses, an arrest, a helicopter and ambulance transport, and a hearse arriving. Students will then return to the auditorium for another video showing what would happen after the crash including the driver being arrested and booked at the police station, and calling their parents.
The agenda for tomorrow is as follows:
8:22 a.m. Juniors and Seniors report to the auditorium.
8:30 a.m. Program begins with a short introduction and first video of the pre-accident.
8:45 a.m. Audience reports outside to the mock crash scene.
9:05 a.m. MedFlight lands.
9:30 a.m. Audience reports back inside for a post-accident video. Safety Officer Bernie Schipelliti & Youth Services Officer Tom Fournier will speak, and there will be a closing question and answer period.
10:00 a.m. Students are dismissed back to classes.
The following organizations are working together to create the mock crash: Burlington Police, Burlington Fire, Boston MedFlight, Armstrong Ambulance, Murray’s Towing, Burlington DPW, Burlington Public Schools, Burlington Cable Access Television and Sullivan Funeral Home.
Members of the media are invited to attend the entire event. For any further questions, please contact Traffic Safety Officer Bernie Schipelliti at 781-983-9211 or bschipelliti@bpd.org.
