Sudbury Police Respond to Head-On Collision Involving School Bus and Car

Note to members of the media: Police Chief Scott Nix will address the media at the Sudbury Police Department on Hudson Road later this evening.

SUDBURY — Police Chief Scott Nix and Fire Chief William Miles report that the Sudbury Police and Fire Departments responded to a head-on crash between a school bus and motor vehicle.

At 3:46 p.m. Wednesday, a school bus traveling on Concord Road near Plympton Road was involved in a motor vehicle crash with a Cadillac sedan.

Upon arrival, Sudbury Police and Fire found that the driver of the sedan, was trapped inside the vehicle. The driver, a 73-year-old Sudbury woman, had to be extricated by the Sudbury Fire Department using the Jaws of Life. She was transported by the Sudbury Fire Department to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston with serious injuries.

The school bus was carrying approximately 25 students and two coaches from the Algonquin Regional High School girls rugby team. First responders initiated a triage situation to determine the extent of any injuries to the passengers and bus driver.  None of the students were seriously injured, but nine students between the ages of 15-18 and the bus driver, a 43-year-old Hudson woman, sustained minor injuries and were taken to MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Emerson Hospital in Concord. Two team coaches were also on the bus and were not injured.

Chiefs Nix and Miles and Sudbury Town Manager Melissa Rodrigues appreciate the assistance of Sudbury DPW and Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School staff for providing logistical support as well as a location at the high school where the students were reunited with their families.

The team was arriving in town to play a game against the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School girls rugby team.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Sudbury Police Department

Mutual aid was provided in the form of additional ambulances by the Wayland and Maynard Fire Departments.
