LOWELL — Superintendent Greg Hudon and Lowell Housing Authority Executive Director Tha Chhan are pleased to report that Lowell Police were able to go bowling and form relationships with youth from Lowell Housing Authority (LHA) properties and other city youth thanks to funding from the Shannon Community Safety Initiative.
On Thursday, Feb. 20, members of Lowell Police Youth Services and School Resource Officers went bowling with 77 youths.
Lowell Police partnered with the LHA on the program, which sought to build relationships and trust and to create positive interactions between police and one of the communities they serve.
Youth and police were both treated to bowling and free video games thanks to funding from the Shannon Community Safety Initiative, which uses a multi-pronged approach to addressing gang and youth violence issues.
State officials encouraged Shannon Grant recipients to partner with local housing authorities on prevention initiatives, so Lowell Police worked with the LHA’s Director of Resident Services & Communications Katie Sadlier to plan the bowling event. This is the first of several events throughout 2025.
“This event was a great opportunity for both officers and youth to have fun together, to get to know each other, and to experience positive interactions,” said Superintendent Hudon. “We are grateful to have an excellent partner like the LHA here in Lowell and for our continued Shannon Grant funding.”
“This was a really fun event for LHA youth. I really appreciated that all of the Officers and Cadets were in the lanes playing with the kids,” said Katie Sadlier. “These healthy and positive interactions have a lasting effect on the development of our youth, and we are looking forward to our next partnering event in March!”
The partnership is just the latest between Lowell Police and the LHA, which funds a full-time police officer assigned to patrol LHA property. In 2023, Lowell Police and the LHA also partnered to open a police precinct in LHA property at 145 Gorham St.
