
DIGHTON — Police Chief George Nichols, on behalf of the Dighton Police Department, congratulates Deputy Chief Ryan Richards for earning the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award after successfully completing three advanced law enforcement leadership training courses this month.
The FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award is given to law enforcement professionals who complete the FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute, Command Leadership Institute, and Executive Leadership Institute. Deputy Chief Richards completed the final piece of this training this month at the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) headquarters in Randolph.
“I would like to congratulate Deputy Chief Richards for earning the prestigious FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award, which is a reflection of his strong leadership qualities and unwavering commitment to serving the Dighton Police Department,” Chief Nichols said. “The essential skills that he has learned throughout this series will serve him well and benefit our entire department as he shares his knowledge.”
Deputy Chief Richards joined the Dighton Police Department in 2007 as a part-time officer and was appointed to a full-time position in 2011. Deputy Chief Richards rose through the ranks, becoming a Detective in 2018, and was appointed as Deputy Chief of the Dighton Police Department in June 2024.
Deputy Chief Richards has demonstrated leadership abilities and teamwork skills in various roles throughout his career, including as the former Dighton Police Officers Local 306 Union president and as a member of the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC). Deputy Chief Richards provided professional support for SEMLEC’s Search and Rescue Unit and Drone Unit during critical incidents.
Supervisor Leadership Institute:
The FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute is a cutting-edge 4 1/2-day program built especially for first-line supervisors and middle managers with the goal of enhancing leadership competencies. Faculty members are senior law enforcement leaders who are committed to passing on their lessons learned. Attendees engage in personality diagnostics, leadership case studies, mentoring, developing staff, performance management, risk management and credibility.
Command Leadership Institute:
The FBI-LEEDA Command Leadership Institute is a dynamic, intensive and challenging 4 1/2-day program specifically and uniquely designed to prepare law enforcement leaders for command-level positions.
The course’s focus is to provide best-practice strategies rooted in real-life examples and techniques for those aspiring to join command-level assignments. Instructors are passionate and have executive-level law enforcement and leadership experience. Students engage in topics including credibility, command discipline and liability, addressing difficult employees and leading change within an organization.
Executive Leadership Institute:
This innovative program is designed for executive-level law enforcement leaders and focuses on the emerging challenges facing the law enforcement profession. The highly interactive program follows the FBI-LEEDA “Cops Talking to Cops” model of professional development, using a wide range of source material and calling upon participants’ own professional experiences to facilitate individual development and learning.
Current course topics include growing trends in law enforcement, 21st-century policing practices, building public trust and organization legitimacy, bias and diversity training, employee wellness, power dynamics, transformational leadership, and social and emotional intelligence.
