WILMINGTON — Chief Joseph Desmond and the Wilmington Police Department share the following statement regarding the tragic attack that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day in New Orleans.
“The Wilmington Police Department would like to express its deepest condolences to the families of the victims. This act of senseless violence, especially on a day representative of joy and new beginnings, is a tragedy that will not be taken lightly.
“Wilmington Police officers will remain vigilant in maintaining the safety of our community.
“We also extend our support to the New Orleans Police Department and all who were affected in the wake of the New Orleans tragedy, where 15 people were senselessly killed and several others — including two police officers — were injured early on New Year’s Day. As law enforcement personnel, we are no strangers to running toward chaos.
“Wilmington Police stand in support of the New Orleans officers who courageously stepped up to defend those celebrating the arrival of the new year and mourn alongside those grieving the loss of their loved ones.”
