STONEHAM — Police Chief James O’Connor reports that the Stoneham Police Department responded to a hit-and-run that seriously injured a woman and are now seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicle.
On Saturday, Oct. 19 at about 8:45 p.m., Stoneham Police were dispatched to the area of Spring Street and Pleasant Street for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers observed a woman lying on the sidewalk with serious injuries.
An initial investigation revealed that the woman had been crossing the street in the designated crosswalk with her granddaughter and their family dog when a vehicle struck the woman. The woman was able to warn her granddaughter before the crash, and the granddaughter and the dog were both unharmed.
Police did not locate the vehicle that hit the woman on scene. Further investigation determined the vehicle was likely speeding at the time of the crash, and that it fled the area after making contact.
The Stoneham Fire Department treated the woman on scene for injuries that are believed to be serious. Armstrong Ambulance transported the woman to an area hospital.
A subsequent investigation determined that the vehicle was likely a small gray or silver SUV.
