STONEHAM — Police Chief James McIntyre reports that the Stoneham Police Department took a juvenile into custody Friday after a vehicle pursuit and later a foot pursuit.
The juvenile, a male of Woburn, was released into custody of a parent later Friday. The incident remains under investigation.
On Friday afternoon, Stoneham Police received a be-on-the-lookout alert after a white Audi was reported stolen in Winchester. This vehicle was later involved in an attempted carjacking in Medford. Medford Police pursued the white Audi onto Interstate 93 north, but then lost contact with it.
About 5:30 p.m., a Stoneham officer located the vehicle near the intersection of Main and South streets and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. In response, the vehicle fled. The vehicle traveled north on Main Street before making a right onto Summer Street, a left onto Pond Street and then a right onto Franklin Street, where the car crashed into a residence. Damage to the home was minor and did not require a visit by the building inspector.
At least three juveniles then fled from the scene. The Stoneham officer pursued one suspect on foot, and that juvenile was taken into custody.
Massachusetts State Police responded to the scene with two K-9s and its Air Wing in the effort to track down the other suspects.
There has been a recent uptick in motor vehicle thefts in the area. Car owners should always lock their cars. They should not leave their cars running if making a quick stop at a store.
All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
