NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Mark Murray reports that the Newburyport Police Department arrested two men yesterday after it was reported they had shoplifted clothing from a local business.
PETER BEEBIE, 29, OF BRADFORD, and DENNIS CURLEY, 31, OF HAVERHILL, were each charged with Larceny from a Building and Conspiracy.
In addition to those charges, both BEEBIE and CURLEY were arrested on outstanding warrants.
Both BEEBIE and CURLEY were arraigned in Newburyport District Court today and each were ordered held on $2,000 bail.
On Wednesday, April 28 at approximately 4:40 p.m., Newburyport Police responded to a call that two men, later identified as BEEBIE and CURLEY, had just entered the Marshalls department store on Storey Avenue in Newburyport and allegedly filled trash bags with clothing before leaving the store on foot. It was reported that the two men had fled to the K-Mart plaza next door.
After speaking with a manager at the Marshalls store, Patrolman Michael Wilichoski responded to the K-Mart plaza and observed a bus waiting at the bus stop. He entered the bus and located BEEBIE and CURLEY, who matched the description of the two men who allegedly stole the clothing. The two men were sitting next to multiple trash bags which contained a large quantity of clothing still on hangers with Marshalls price tags.
Both BEEBIE and CURLEY were placed under arrest and transported to the Newburyport Police Station without incident.
Police estimate the value of the stolen clothing at approximately $1,600.
“The quick response by Officer Wilichoski and subsequent identification of the suspects was key in recovering this large amount of stolen merchandise,” City Marshal Murray said. “I commend him for his efficient work, as well as Officers Shawn Eaton and James Allen who assisted with the arrests.”
