LITTLETON — Chief Matthew J. Pinard wishes to provide his thoughts on the police killing of George Floyd, which has sparked protests against racism and police brutality throughout the United States and beyond.
“Traditionally, I do not feel comfortable addressing police incidents that occur outside of the Littleton community, but it’s long past time for the law enforcement profession, and indeed our nation as a whole, to step out of our comfort zones to address racism, inappropriate uses of force and injustice.
“Our officers know and understand that there is no place in law enforcement for people like the officers who murdered George Floyd, either through the use of improper force, callous indifference or both.
“We commit significant resources and attention to training officers on important 21st century policing approaches, which emphasize de-escalation, valuing diversity and prioritizing restorative justice. We teach and model procedural justice and police legitimacy.
“The entire Littleton Police Department stands with those who are peacefully protesting Mr. Floyd’s murder, and join with those calling for charges against all of the officers involved, and support the demand for broader systemic change that will help us realize the American ideal of liberty and justice for all.”
