Bridgewater Police Department Promotes Four Officers, Swears In New Hire
BRIDGEWATER — Chief Christopher D. Delmonte is pleased to announce that four Bridgewater Police officers were promoted and a new officer was sworn in during a ceremony last week.
On Thursday, April 5, the officers were sworn in and received their new badges at the Bridgewater Senior Center with their family members and loved ones in attendance.
- Lt. Thomas J. Schlatz III was promoted to Captain and Executive Officer
- Sgt. Carl H. MacDermott III was promoted to Lieutenant and Operations Officer
- Officer Scott R. Hile was promoted to Sergeant and Patrol Supervisor
- Officer Robert J. Bailey was promoted to Sergeant and Patrol Supervisor
- James D. Doherty Jr. was sworn in as an Officer
Serving since 1988, Captain Schlatz has been a member of the Bridgewater Police Department for nearly three decades. He was promoted to sergeant in 1998 and has served as a lieutenant, executive officer and operations officer since 2010.
His duties over the years have included supervising all patrol and investigative operations, supervision of 911 call-taking and heading up grant management, among many other roles within the department.
As the department’s accreditation manager, he was vital in the Bridgewater Police Department achieving full accreditation status in 2016, by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, for the first time.
“I have had the privilege and honor of working with Captain Schlatz for the entirety of our careers,” Chief Delmonte said. “He has been a proven leader, respected member of the command staff and a true and trusted professional. I am proud of him and his many accomplishments.”
Lieutenant MacDermott has been an officer with the department since 1984. Prior to working in Bridgewater, he was an officer with the Lakeville Police Department from 1981-1984.
In 1998, Lieutenant MacDermott became a detective and over the years has investigated and managed several serious criminal investigations, including homicide and death scenes, sexual assaults, robberies and home invasions.
He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2011, where he took on additional duties as a patrol supervisor. Lieutenant MacDermott is also a member of the Southeastern Law Enforcement Council regional SWAT team.
“Lieutenant MacDermott is a person of great moral and ethical character. He is passionate about police service and about this community. He is one of the most respected and experienced leaders in our profession who ‘walks-the-walk,’ ” Chief Delmonte said. “This community has always relied on Lieutenant MacDermott’s clear judgement and technical skills during a crisis. His administrative and operational support will be a welcome addition to further professionalizing our organization.”
Sergeant Hile has worked for the department for a total of 10 years. He has been an instructor in a variety of fields, including Narcan deployment, TASER operation, women’s defense, CPR and the department’s Citizen’s Police Academy. He serves as the department’s designee on the Plymouth County Opioid Awareness Coalition and has also helped to successfully obtain several grants.
“Sergeant Hile has developed a very successful career based on his intelligence, personal integrity and his commitment to the community,” Chief Delmonte said. “I have known him to be a truly dedicated police officer and excellent communicator who will bring many of his skills to bear against the challenges we will face in the future.”
Detective Sergeant Bailey has been with the Bridgewater Police since 1996. Prior to that, he was a correction officer with the Massachusetts Department of Correction from 1988-1996. He was assigned to the Bridgewater Police detective division in 2013 and has investigated and managed several important cases for the department. He has held many operational roles, including firearms licensing officer, field training officer and breathalyzer certification training officer. Detective Sergeant Bailey is a member of the bicycle patrol and honor guard.
“Between Sergeant Bailey’s correctional experience, years in patrol and extensive investigative experience, he has developed exceptional communication skills with the public, his colleagues and subordinates,” Chief Delmonte said. “These skills have proven invaluable during high stress incidents and will prove invaluable as a supervisor.”
Officer Doherty is a 2012 graduate of Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School and studied criminal justice at Bridgewater State University. He has worked as a full-time police officer with the Northeastern University Police Department and completed the MBTA Police Academy 38th Municipal Police Officer Class in 2017, as an honor graduate.
Officer Doherty is now a full-time officer with the Bridgewater Police Department and will be assigned to field-training with his designated field training officer.
“Officer Doherty comes to us with a great amount of experience under his belt already,” Chief Delmonte said. “I look forward to watching him grow in this profession and I am hopeful that he will prove to be an asset to our department and the community.”
