Methuen Police Chief Graduates from Senior Management Institute for Police

METHUEN — Mayor Stephen Zanni and the Methuen Police Department are pleased to announce that Chief Joseph Solomon graduated from the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) last week.

A graduation ceremony was held at Boston University on Thursday, June 22.

Developed by the Police Executive Research Forum, the SMIP is a national curriculum for senior law enforcement executives designed to provide attendees with an understanding of general management theory, policy development, planning processes and organizational behavior.

During the 18-day course, participants learned about leadership and executive development from faculty from the nation’s top universities and other successful law enforcement chief executives.

“I commend Chief Solomon for committing to this extensive managerial course and for his continued dedication to our police department,” Mayor Zanni said. “Chief Solomon continues to go above and beyond to serve the community and the city of Methuen to the best of his ability, and his SMIP certification is just another example of exemplary leadership.”

The curriculum addressed current issues that law enforcement leaders face in real time, and covered topics such as diversity, political management, organizational strategy, performance management, organizational change, leadership, managerial problem-solving, career planning, negotiation, process analysis, media relations, and new policing strategies and innovations.

SMIP classes are held at Boston University, where participants live and learn in the university’s classrooms and residence halls for the duration of the program. The course is designed as more of a conceptual curriculum, rather than technical, and involves readings and class discussions to stimulate critical thinking and problem-solving. Participants also share individual management experiences and exchange ideas during group discussions.

“Graduating from the Senior Management Institute for Police was an invaluable experience,” Chief Solomon said. “I’m leaving the course with additional knowledge in the areas of leadership and effective management, which are both vital skills needed to keep our community safe.”
