Arlington Police Cite Driver after Van Crashes into Home
ARLINGTON — Chief Frederick Ryan reports that the Arlington Police Department cited a man this morning after he crashed a work van into a home.
A 45-YEAR-OLD NEW YORK MAN is cited for Failing to Secure a Motor Vehicle When Exiting.
At approximately 8 a.m., police responded to Sunset Road on a report that a van had crashed into a house.
Upon arrival, officers located a Ford Econoline chimney service van, registered out of New York, that had crashed into a brick stairway of a home on 134 Sunset Road.
Police learned that the driver had failed to put the van in park on Aerial Street, and the vehicle then proceeded to roll forward, approximately 100 yards down the hill, before it crashed into the home on Sunset Road.
As the driver exited the van, he noticed it begin to move forward and attempted to jump back in, but was knocked down and found laying in the middle of Forest Street, which intersects with Aerial Street, when police arrived to the scene.
The passenger of the van was still inside the vehicle when it began rolling down the hill. In an attempt to stop the van, the passenger grabbed the wheel, which in turn resulted in it crashing into the home on Sunset Road.
Both the driver and passenger were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and the van was towed from the scene with substantial front-end damage.
The Building Inspector found no structural damage to the house. One resident was inside the home at the time of the crash.
“I commend Arlington Police and Fire personnel for their quick response to the scene, as they were able to treat the driver quickly, who we’re thankful was not seriously injured,” Chief Ryan said.
